Carl Ankarcrona founded his communication consultancy, Sowrite, in 2013 after 18 years in banking and wealth management. With a life-long passion for writing, he decided to tackle the challenge of switching into communication. Realising that it was easier said than done, he reversed the old saying of “If you can’t beat them, join them!” into “If you can’t join them, beat them!” and started his own business. A successful development of the company has enabled Carl to work for clients as diverse as watch companies, banks, fund and wealth managers, hotels and consultants and coaches. If there is an interesting message to create, he’ll do it. Like most people in Geneva, he is not Swiss, but a New York-born Swede, who has lived in the USA, Belgium and Switzerland. He has a Belgian-born Dutch wife and two children.
En quoi consiste ton métier en 1 phrase ? 5 mots ? 1 mot ?
Sowrite helps companies and individuals communicate effectively across all media. We create, translate or improve messages for websites, newsletters, brochures and more. Copywriting, content writing, translating, proofreading, and creating. Writing.
Ta journée de content writer/copywriter d’hier ?
Started the day with a 6.45am networking event, worked on a farmland fund presentation, had lunch with a client, wrote an article for a company’s internal magazine in the afternoon. Then went home to see my family and play with my kids.
Ton truc pour résoudre les conflits/apaiser les tensions ?
I work alone, so on a personal level I take a walk or read something that is not related to what I am working on. It gives me a moment to step back and look at the situation from a new perspective. When working with clients I try to make sure that everyone gets a chance to give their input so that all those involved are satisfied with the outcome. Swedes try to avoid conflicts by not letting tension build up in the first place.
Ta plus belle expérience/anecdote ?
Getting my first client outside of my immediate network. I attended a conference and networking event; it was the first time I was out marketing my company and my skills. I felt a little out of place as I came from a completely different industry. I started talking with the Project Manager of a digital agency at the event, and three days later he asked me to do the copywriting for a large website relaunch.
Ta meilleure recommandation, et à qui ?
Don’t let your fear of what could happen make nothing happen. This is to anyone who is facing an important change, either personally or professionally. Leaving the banking world to go into communication was a tough transition, as my professional background did not reflect the communication skills I have. I was determined to succeed and pushed ahead, eventually starting my own company in the process. Spending too much time thinking about what could go wrong blocks you from trying anything new.
Un conseil pour un jeune/nouveau content writer/copywriter ?
If you enjoy what you do and you feel passionate about it, there is nothing that can stop you from succeeding in the business. Get out and meet people, read everything you can get your hands on, and attend events. There are so many events in the Geneva region – with amazing, enthusiastic people giving their time, and sharing their knowledge and ideas. Go see them, talk to them, and ask them questions. Many people are very happy to continue the discussion over a coffee.
Ton petit plaisir ?
Writing children’s books. Nothing is impossible in the world of children. Their imagination is amazing. I try to capture this, often by watching what my own children do and say, and then transforming that into stories. I recently met an illustrator and we are working on defining the style of illustrations for one of my stories. Hopefully I will find a way to publish it. Maybe some of your readers have experience with publishing? Kids are a tough audience to write for, which makes the challenge even more fun.
Que ferais-tu si tu étais plus intelligent ?
I think we are all intelligent in our own way; we all have different skills in different areas. So, if I had more “industrial design intelligence” I might actually design and build some of the projects that are currently hibernating in my idea-book.
Et maintenant, que vas-tu faire ?
Continue learning, and to develop my writing skills in more subjects. For example, I am helping my wife write the teaser for a personal photo project that she is working on.
Le mot de la fin ?
It’s never too late to start over. If you weren’t happy with yesterday, try something different today. Don’t stay stuck. Do better.
